Next up on our house tour is our living room! This room has gone through several transformations over the course of our time here. Here’s what it looked like in November of 2008, 3 months after move-in:
And here’s what it looks like today, from a similar angle:
Quite an improvement, no? Although there were a lot of changes, some things did stay the same. We still have the same Karlstad sofa from IKEA (I want a new cover for it desperately!), although we attached the chaise instead of having it floating in the corner. We also still have those white, blue and green floral pillow covers (which I love!). Those are from Target years ago…in fact, they followed us here from our last house/apartment. Also, the window treatments are the same, however, the one above the chair(s) is now a single panel. When I bought them originally they didn’t have the size I needed, so we lived with two smaller ones side by side. Annoying.
This little TV nook is one of the reasons that our living room layout can’t change too much. That, and the giant french doors to the right of the television that lead to my office/workout room. We found the TV console at the local ReStore and snatched it up for $10! It underwent a serious makeover – we removed the middle doors, added shelves for our components, and painted it. Here’s what it looked like before (brace yourself):
Above the television is a sign that Mister P and I worked on together. I wanted something large and impactful on this wall. The boards are from the old fence in our backyard that Mister P cut to size and assembled to my specifications. I painted the words from our wedding song (At Last, Etta James’ version). It’s not perfect, but that’s part of the reason I love it so much!
This (huge) wooden tray with iron details I found at Marshall’s for a song. I’m kind of obsessed with trays and have quite a few of them. They used to sell something similar at Pottery Barn for some crazy amount. The porcelain branch was a 2nd anniversary gift from Mister P, and is from Etsy shop Brooklyn Rehab. The vintage glass dish was a gift from my mother. The adorable French Bulldog pillow was a Christmas gift from Mister P from Pottery Barn Kids, and is one of my favorite things in the room!
The wall color in here is the same as our bedroom – Perfect Taupe by Behr. Some of the wall art I made, others are prints from various artists. The giant floral rug (I think it’s 10′ x 13′) was found at Home Goods. The two cream leather slipper chairs are from Overstock (one of them is slightly deeper than the other and it drives me bananas!), and the robin’s egg blue tweed storage ottoman is from Urban Outfitters. The lamp on the right I found in the gutter while I was jogging through our neighborhood – I guess exercise really does pay off! The cat on the back of the sofa is Chewbacca, AKA Chewie…she came with the Mister as part of a package deal 😉
Most of the stuff on these shelves (from IKEA) was thrifted, with the exception of our wedding album and the ‘We’ve only just begun’ print, which is from Chris Piascik. The sassy redhead is ‘Paige in a Green Dress’ by Janet Hill.
You can actually see that we have a vaulted ceiling in this photo! It really makes the room look larger. We also have a ceiling fan which isn’t pictured. They get a bad rap, but let me tell you, we use it constantly. Our cardboard steer, Tex, is from Cardboard Safari.
I’m pretty pleased with the current state of our living room. What do you think?
